Did somebody say A.I. filmmaking?

WHEN I WALK AROUND MY HOME  - 2019/2020

      There’s always something that draws us to “technology”, however small and improbable. I guess I could summarise my own relationship with technology as fearful curiosity, with timid attempts at cooperating with it. My interest did not stop, however, at the mechanical works of softwares and artificial intelligence, but at the potential this area has for collaborative artistic practices. In truth, I wanted to know if I could write with a computer and collaborate with A.I. tools, rather than just make use of them. This tension between automation and autonomy gave way to a long course of experimentations, from games to stories to film scripts, all made with GPT-2, a language model provided by OpenAI. 

 

     When I walk around my home began more as a question than an idea. I kept wondering if technology, and later innovation, would ever become obsolete. This inquiry, along with my fascination with The Weird And The Eerie, sprung forth a series of experiments that focused mainly (and inevitably) on the creation and curation of narratives. Stories sit at the basis of everything we do and know, permeating cultures, lifestyles, histories. The storytelling mechanisms we use are so human that it seems, even at this time, wrong to put it in the hands of machines — which is precisely why I did it. Writing experiments turned into script writing, which then evolved into filmmaking. 

 

     When I walk around my home is to be a platform for A.I. filmmaking, represented by a series of short films made with scripts generated by GPT-2. The program generates a continuation for the prompt, another website aids with generating a film genre/subgenre, and so these components become a film. The tension between automation — having the algorithm generate the script and indicate the genre — and autonomy, with me curating the production, gives the films a fragile reflection of human-machine interaction. Drawing inspiration from the Dogme 95 movement, which proposed the elimination of special effects in film, the intended framework seeks to subvert human contribution in filmmaking and provide a space for more collaboration between humans and machines.
