So what is this?

When I Walk Around My Home is a platform, a framework and a series of short films, all made with the help of algorithms and artificial intelligence. The framework was designed to be easy and fun to play with. It's for everybody!

But why?

This method of producing short films sees A.I. as a collaborator rather than a tool. We have seen artificial intelligence used in film production as a means to automate tedious tasks, but what if such algorithms could contribute to the artistic process undertook by creatives? What if the algorithm is the writer, the producer, the director? It has also become quite common to associate A.I. in creative practices with a threat to the future of the craft; the method tries to deconstruct that.

As such, the proposed framework seeks to maintain a fragile balance, as with any collaboration, between automation and autonomy. The machine writes with us,

not for us.

Is it for me?

This framework is for everybody.

What started as something very personal is now available for everyone to use, which is why the instructions are public. The videos shown on this page can (or can't) serve as examples of work made with the framework.

Whether coming from a film background or an artificial intelligence enthusiast, the method simply encourages everyone with an interest in film, A.I. and storytelling to experiment and ponder the future of filmmaking.

It can also just be an adventurous creative challenge!

Don't feel like writing?

I have made a number of scripts available for use. They are already formatted and all of them begin with the same prompt: When I walk around my home.

Just download the script and good luck!

Why at home?

Unless you are visiting from the future and have no idea what is going on, then you might know why.

The social distancing measures put in place for COVID-19  at the beginning of 2020 made it difficult for people to leave their homes. So why not transform the home into something else? This method encourages the community to redefine the home and attach new meanings to such personal spaces. The home can be anything and everything.

For some people though home isolation and social distancing are an everyday reality, rather than extraordinary circumstances. I believe these fun exercises are especially useful for anybody who finds themselves feeling distant at home. We reinvent the home, we bring back the home!
